Every year on May 22, healthcare professionals, birth workers, doulas, and families around the world observe World Pre-eclampsia Day. This event is to raise awareness about one of the most serious pregnancy complications — Pre-eclampsia. This global campaign highlights the importance of early detection, maternal healthcare, pregnancy education, and timely medical support to protect both mother and baby.
Through “Know Her Symptoms,” this year’s theme, raise awareness, provide education, and promote proper prenatal care. As a birth doula, I believe many cases can be managed safely through proper awareness and involvement. So, here is our special edition for the 22nd World Pre-eclampsia Day, focused on maternal health and pregnancy care.
Pre-eclampsia affects millions of pregnant women worldwide and remains a leading cause of maternal mortality, premature birth, and newborn complications. It is a pregnancy-related condition characterized by high blood pressure and signs of organ damage, usually after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Furthermore, it can affect the liver, kidneys, brain, and placenta, making it dangerous if left untreated.
Remember, some women may experience little to no symptoms, which is why regular prenatal check-ups are extremely important.

The 22nd World Pre-eclampsia Day serves as a reminder that maternal health awareness saves lives. As a practitioner and experienced doula, I believe that pregnancy complications can be reduced through early screening. In addition to proper prenatal monitoring and access to quality healthcare. This global advocacy aims to:
Awareness campaigns also help empower pregnant mothers to speak up about symptoms and seek immediate medical attention when needed.
Pre-eclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication. The question is, who is at risk for this? While any pregnant woman, even a healthier one, can develop this high-risk pregnancy condition, certain factors can increase the risk. That is why it is crucial that healthcare providers continuously monitor pregnancy throughout every stage.
Factors that can increase the risk include:

While birth doulas do not diagnose or treat medical conditions, continuous birth support and emotional care can be a crucial help. Through skilled doulas, expecting mothers feel informed, empowered, and supported throughout pregnancy. Remember, a strong support system during pregnancy significantly improves maternal well-being and reduces stress.

One of the best ways to reduce the risks of pre-eclampsia is through regular prenatal visits. Prenatal visits are regular check-ups with a healthcare provider during pregnancy. These visits help monitor the health of both the mother and the baby throughout the pregnancy. This includes monitoring blood pressure, urine protein levels, baby growth, and maternal health throughout pregnancy. Moreover, early detection can greatly improve outcomes for both mother and baby.
Healthy pregnancy habits, such as attending regular prenatal visits, can help promote a safer and more comfortable pregnancy. With the right support and preparation, expectant mothers can feel more confident and empowered throughout every stage of pregnancy. Learn the other crucial habits to ensure a healthy childbirth experience.

Pregnancy-related complications can still happen even after childbirth. One serious condition that many new mothers are unaware of is postpartum pre-eclampsia. Although pre-eclampsia commonly develops during pregnancy, it can also occur after delivery. Sometimes, days or even weeks later, recognizing the warning signs early can protect both maternal health and recovery.
Many new mothers mistake the symptoms for normal postpartum recovery. However, certain warning signs should never be ignored.
The conversation about maternal healthcare should continue every day — not only during awareness campaigns. As your Nashville birth doula, I always love to provide moms, mom-to-be, and their families with information and evidence-based strategies to protect them and their babies. Families, healthcare providers, doulas, and communities all play a significant role in avoiding this pregnancy disorder.
On the 22nd World Pre-eclampsia Day, let us continue spreading awareness about safe pregnancy, maternal health advocacy, and compassionate birth support. Every mother deserves access to education, care, and support throughout her childbirth journey. Keep in mind, doulas provide essential emotional, physical, and informational support for mothers experiencing high-risk pregnancies.
Pre-eclampsia is serious, but awareness saves lives. By understanding the signs, prioritizing prenatal care, and supporting maternal wellness, we can help create safer pregnancies and healthier families worldwide. If you are pregnant and experiencing symptoms such as severe headaches, swelling, vision changes, or high blood pressure, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Together, we can raise awareness, support mothers, and protect the beauty of childbirth and life.
